Being a mother is the most rewarding job any of us will ever have. However, it is not a job that will put food on the table and clothes on our backs. Adding to your family is essentially increasing the amount of money going out while giving you less time to work.
It is a cycle that can be exhausting. Needing second or third jobs to make ends meet seems like a simple solution to those who don’t have kids. For us we are well aware that we barely have time for our current priorities. By taking a second job we are giving up on precious time with our kids and that is not something any good parent wants to sacrifice.
I am not going to sit here and tell you to take on another job to make ends meet. Unless of course that job allows you some flexibility and work from home hours. Blogging is something I do for extra income and it works in my life. I have the ability to write a bunch on a day where my husband and son are doing some male bonding. I simply set up a schedule for the posts to release and am able to not miss out on big mom things.
Not that this is easy, I spend a lot of time blogging. I just have the ability to do this while my boys are sleeping, at school and work or sometimes while they are running amuck in the house.
I am not suggesting that this is the solution for all families. In fact, it takes a unique person to dedicate this amount of time for the little payoff in the end. There is a deeper love for blogging required that many people just don’t have. It’s okay though, I don’t judge. I don’t have the capacity to do a lot of things!
For moms who are looking to improve their financial situation but don’t want to add a second job, I have one piece of advice…Go back to school. Who cares if you already have a degree or if school has never been your path? Life changes quickly and this may just be the next direction you should head in.
You can earn a degree that will help you to move up in your current profession or you could earn one that would open the door to many new opportunities.
For those of you who have never obtained a degree to begin with maybe you should look into some sort of nursing assistant program. They are in high demand and with a career like this you could find some stability and a place to continue your education. Many hospitals provide tuition reimbursement for employees looking to move up the ladder.
If you already have a degree but are a natural leader and looking to earn a Master’s, I suggest you look into the Cardinal Stritch MSM Program. This field focuses on the development of organizations. This is an emerging field that will look terrific on your resume. Whether you are looking to go into finances, accounting or management, an MSM degree will give you a leg up.
The reason I recommend school is because, like blogging, you can earn your credentials on your own time. Many programs offer online options now, making it way more possible for a busy person to continue their education.
There are also many grants for parents to go back to school. Finding funding can be fairly harmless and the returns will be well worth the hours spent. Your family deserves for you to be the best you. A few years of added responsibility are minimal when it means a lifetime of stability to follow.
