A post on Nursing Ideas brought to my attention that there is now a category in the Shorty Awards for Nurse of the Year.
Pretty neat to think that there are nurses who are making an impact on social media to the point that they have a category in the Short Awards.
So what exactly are the Shorty Awards? Well they describe themselves as “The Oscars or Tony awards for Twitter”. The Showtime TV show Nurse Jackie have partnered with them to create this category to be awarded to a nurse who is “making a difference on twitter”.
I like it. Twitter has certainly helped me to grow and learn in my nursing career because of the many great influences (many of them nurses) that I have had the pleasure of reading and interacting with. I would have to say that those nurses have certainly made a differences in my life and I am glad to see this recognition. I so enjoy reading the 140 micro-blogs of those who write about the highs and lows we experience as healthcare providers.
Blogging and social media have given me strength to carry on in my work environment even after many told me I should have quit. I just couldn’t do it, and when the times were the hardest, I would look online and find people who had experienced the same nursing issues I had. In writing about my experiences with being bullied as a nurse, I have become much more aware of what is import in nursing and what cannot be taught: Caring.
Taking a look at the Short Awards for Nurse is also a great opportunity to get a good listing of great nurses to follow on twitter together. So I encourage all of you to nominate your favorite nurse for this honor. Also, be sure to check out the list and see who you aren’t following that you probably should be!
So head on over, find you some new twitter friends, and nominate your favorite nurse or nurses for a Shorty Award!
