Thanks to The Millionaire Nurse Blog, and My Strong Medicine, I found the following infographic.
I find it every interesting and eye-opening.
Just a few weeks ago I was talking to my husband about how I wasn’t quite sure why we actually needed sleep. Our bodies are in a constant state of repair and renewal. So why exactly do we need to sleep?
Well, because it boils down to sleep or die.
See the following infographic for an explanation as to why we all need sleep to function well. Nurses this goes double for you! How do you expect to take care of others if you don’t first take care of yourself?
One thing I found most helpful is to really look at reasons I may not be getting enough sleep. Do you need white noise, a good pillow, a new blanket, or even a new mattress? Figure out what is causing your lack of sleep and fix it.
What I found particularly interesting is that less that 5 hours of sleep can actually increase your risk of diabetes by as much as 2 1/2 times. It can also lead to increase in heart attack by 45%. In general it increases your risk of death by 12%. A 12% boost in death likelihood over a few hours of sleep every night. Pretty impactful.
Lack of sleep can also make you gain weight and feel lethargic. Your body goes into fight or flight mode and does not process food properly causing it to store excess fat. Over time the results of this can be noticeable and life impacting.
As you can see, the above infographic gives an excellent visual of how lack of sleep can contribute for various comorbidities that can certainly contribute to your early demise.

Maintaining good Health is important to me. thanks so much
WONDERFUL INFORMATION…should be a tool we all remind ourselves of things to come!
You can actually die for not sleeping if you have a rare brain disease called Fatal familial insomnia (FFI).
It has no known cure and involves progressively worsening insomnia, which leads to hallucinations, delirium, and confusional states. The average survival span for patients diagnosed with FFI after the onset of symptoms is 18 months. =(
yes, this infograph makes you think twice about all that sleep you don’t get!
Good call Capt. Obvious.
this article is idiot…it groups 5 hours of sleep together with 0 sleep…utterly pointless.
hey did you know if you eat between 1-200 big macs a day your odds of dying in 2 years are 85%?!?!
You are right to point out that statistics can be manipulated.
I found the information interesting and thought others might as well.
Thank you for your comment.
