Tips to Maintain Your Health in Winter Months

We’re now smack dab in the middle of winter, the time of year that is notoriously difficult for healthy people. Poor outdoor exercising conditions and holiday eating rampages are largely to blame. But the reality is that it is still possible to sustain healthy habits during the winter months. Here are a few of the ways you can ensure that you continue to boost your health and maintain a healthy regimen through the New Year:

Jogging in Harsh Weather

For most people–excluding, perhaps, those who live in extremely temperate climates like San Diego–winter entails cold temperatures and even ice, snow, and sleet. This means you need to buy some decent running shoes and warm exercise clothes to help you brave the elements. The mental feeling of conquering whatever nature throws at you and the physical victory of running farther than you have before make all the difference for exercising this season.

You can also supplement jogs with interspersed workouts like pushups, sit-ups, and stretches. You can do this while enjoying the fresh wind, the thundering clouds, and the drenching rain for a boosted workout. This improves mental stamina, physical endurance, and motivation for when the warm weather returns. Take advantage of nature’s obstacles to really up your endurance.

Keep Things in Balance With Healthy Sleep/Wake Cycles

In the human body, there are a number of different processes that have to go on regularly in order to live a healthy lifestyle. Exercise is one of these. Sleep is another. Our sleep/wake cycles determine to a large extent how well we manage stress and how we interact with colleagues and friends. In other words, poor sleeping habits can ruin what would be an otherwise healthy individual.

If you suffer from insomnia or are having difficulty sleeping you should look into getting medical care. This is a serious condition that can whittle away at your health for years and years. There are many innovative ways to wake up at an optimal time. The bedtime function on your iPhone is one of the simples. The Eight mattress is a really neat mattress that monitors your sleep to wake you up at the optimal time.

Nutrients and Supplements are a Must

The food supply has undergone a major change in the last few years, and it’s important to change your diet according to dietary needs. Adding specific supplements to your diet like proteins, fish oils, antioxidants, and more can help you in enormous ways for those who take on the challenge of outdoor workouts in cold weather. You can acquire specific supplements by scouring the Internet. Make a list of supplements that routinely pop up, like chromium for instance. Also, keep your eyes peeled for natural supplements and ones that help fill in a dietary need that you’re lacking. For example, most people don’t get enough fiber or calcium.

Winter is tough for many reasons. Holiday stress, cold weather, and end-of-year deadlines. Don’t compound these factors with an unhealthy lifestyle. Maintain your healthy habits this winter. You’ll thank me in the spring.

  1. I like #2 – I think everyone *says* they’ll drink more water, but it’s often something we forget about in our busy lives!

LOVE this topic, Brittney! I could go on and on about this one. But I have ONE sure-fire thing to add to your list of easy tips for maintaining your health: do the things that YOU enjoy! Why is that? If we do not enjoy our healthy choice we are not going to do it. If I hate to run then each day I tell myself it’s time for a run- I’ll find SOMEthing, anything, else to do instead of running! Heck, I might even choose to wash my toilets over running… So find what you enjoy and the healthy behavior is that much easier to do!! Thanks for a great article. I totally agree with each of your easy tips and do them for myself every day! Have a healthy day,
    Elizabeth
