As a nurse caring is second nature to me.
Well honestly, as a human being, caring is second nature to me, but the nurse in me makes me enjoy it. And we all know that unfortunately not everyone cares.
I also know that as a nurse I am constantly battling the all-too-familar nursing diagnosis (or NANDA for you nursing student lovelies) of Care Giver Role Strain. It’s what happens when you care too much. It’s what happens when you don’t take the time away for your obligations and spend a little time on yourself. It’s what causes burnout as a nurse, stress and depression, and upsets in marriages. As nurses we are always trying to take care of everyone. Constantly trying to fix things. Constantly giving of ourselves. We sometimes forget that there are others who can do theses task. We are not the only one who can care. We do no need to do it all on our own.
It is important that we let someone else have control of the reigns. We need to hire a babysitter, get some respite care for our elderly family members, or get someone else to clean to house so that we can have a day, an evening, or even just a few hours for ourselves. Care.com is a resource that you can use to help you do this. They are a website which helps caregivers and give care. They help to connect you with qualified and reputable companies and individuals to help you care. Their services are varied and include cleaning, senior care, babysitters & nannies, and even your pets!
When you find yourself running thin, take a deep breath, step back from the situation, (perhaps even run into the bathroom and scream a few good times, it helps. I won’t say how I know, but it does) and realize that you don’t to be the only to care. There are others who can help. And personally I think my sanity is worth a few bucks. I think your family and friends would agree.
So check out care.com if you’re in need of finding reliable care for your kids, parents, pets, and even your home.
You deserve to have someone else care for a little while. No guilt. No shame.
