Scan Your Skin for Cancer and Your Money for Fraud

My generation has been the first to have video games their entire childhood. We are the first to have computers throughout most of of lives, and the first to have cell phones be a part of every day life. We have witnised the start of internet in our homes and gone from dial-up, to broadband, to wifi, to 4G. We have seen the rise and fall of AOL, MySpace, and… well whatever next huge internet thing goes down the drain.

Everyday there is something becoming a reality that was once only part of the movies. Fantasies are becoming a reality and it’s because we are allowed to have our imaginations run wild. The sky is the limit, and imaginations are being stretched to their limits. Because of this, things like body scanners and instant diagnostic technologies are in our very near future. The “Star Trek Nursing” that my husband says I want to be a part of is becoming real-world nursing.

Remember Microbiology?

My gosh how I hated lugging that 20lb microscope across the room, and don’t even dream of scooting that thing across the table. It’d shake the bejebiz out of the lens or something crazy like that, and my OCD professor would darn near fail you right out of the class right then and there. Each one was like half each years budget, and they were more fragile than a canary egg, so we had to be exceptionally gentle. But they were huge, gaudy and cumbersome.

Now they’ve made a microscope that’s the size of a cell phone. Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Germany have created a thin, portable, microscope that scans your skin to detect cancer. The form factor is actually large part of th design, since it is covered in series of lenses that takes multiple images and merges them together. Think of it likes a tiny panoramic camera… but for your skin.

So rather than having to go through the complexities, risk, and extra time involved in with biopsies; potentially, your doctor can scan your skin the office and characterize

But if that doesn’t do it for you, then you can also use it… or well a version of it… to scan documents to verify authenticity.

Verify your cancer and your cash with a pocket-sized device.

Now what would really impress me is if you pressed a button and it zapped away your cancer and changed a $5. But I don’t put limits on the possibilities in our future, so my wishes for instant change makers and cancer zappers may not be too far off.
