The recent apocalyptic style attack of the weather on the southern states has devastated so many. Many lost of their homes, jobs, and hope. Some even lost of their lives. According to Yahoo New, the 15 state outbreak was the worst since 2008. Wikipedia states: “Between April 25 and 28, a historic tornado outbreak took place across much of the Southern United States as well as parts of the Midwest andNortheast. With over 300 confirmed tornadoes and 317 tornadic fatalities, the outbreak ranks as one of the worst in United States history.”
My are was hit pretty hard, but not as hard as others, even though our hospital did have to run on generators for 2 days while major transformers were replaced by Georgia Power. Some areas in Alabama, many areas where my coworkers live, were without power for 10 days. This is merely the devastation of the store that effected every person I know, it doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the few that did lose everything.
Nursing school is incredibly stressful. I’ve stated before, it’s pretty much a circus. But can you imagine going through nursing school, being nearly done, and having your home destroyed, or a family member injured? Imagine the stress that would place on a person. Now it’s May, you’ve somehow managed to pull it together, pass nursing school, and are anxious to get your first job so you can try to start to rebuild some of what you lost. There is one major hurdle standing in your way: The NCLEX. No acronym elicits more fear in a young nurse-to-be.
In an inspiring gesture of good will, Kaplan is stepping up to the plate and offering recent graduates free NCLEX-RN review course. There is only one site, and one course that is being publicized at the moment, but this nerdy nurse hopes that Kaplan gets overwhelming support for this kind gesture and offers a few more, in a few more states, so that a few more lives can have some bit of hope and confidence instill in them.

To help aspiring nurses in Alabama whose nursing education may have been interrupted by the tornado disasters last month, Kaplan Nursing is offering its NCLEX-RN Review Class for free, Monday, May 23 through Thursday, May 26, from 9 AM to 4 PM, at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama… …Students will also receive three months of online access to Kaplan’s Qbank, an online question bank and the Question Trainer, a bank of online practice tests.”
This gesture goes to the core of what nursing is about: caring. I hope that many new-grads are able to take advantage of this opportunity. I hope that other’s who can help will follow Kaplan’s example and help those who are taking their first steps to commit their lives to helping others.
The following schools are able to register for this course and should contact their nursing school directly to do so:
“In times of critical need, nurses have always played a frontline role,” said Jon Zeitlin, president, Kaplan Nursing. “By offering this course free to local nursing students, we are reaffirming our commitment to these individuals who want to build careers dedicated to helping others.”
Kaplan states they anticipate offering more classes in June and even options for students who are unable to travel to the onsite locations.
Zeitlin added that future free NCLEX-RN courses for affected students are planned in June, with the added ability for students unable to travel to on-site classroom locations to access them via Kaplan’s Classroom Anywhere™ technology, which takes the dynamic interaction of a live instructor and combines it with state-of-the-art online tools (audio, instant chat, whiteboard, polling, and screen-sharing functionality) to create a virtual classroom experience. All they need to take part is a computer and high-speed Internet connection.
The NCLEX is a maker or breaker for many nurses. This $300 test determines your ability to practice as a nurse, and having any extra edge to tackle the beast is always welcome. Though I do not think you should sterss over the test at all (because it really isn’t as bad as some people claim) you take every opportunity to prepare yourself, especially if you are able to do so for free.
To those effected by the tornado disasters: My heart goes out to you. I am sorry for your loss and cannot begin to imagine the sorry and stress that you face.
To Kaplan: Thank you for doing this for nurses. We appreciate every kind gesture we are given.
About the NCLEX:
In the most recently recorded year, more than 145,000 aspiring nurses took the NCLEX-RN exam. For more information on the exam, students can visit www.kaplannursing.com.

As many people will be aware, the NCLEX RN review test is performed in preparing a nurse for a nursing career. There are various study guides or tools as well as classes available for the student so they can be more prepared concerning this extremely difficult exam.
