Nursing Shortage

Was asked to share this graphic and felt inclined to do so, although not sure what nursing shortages have to do with becoming a veterinarytechnician it does send a good message. There is one solution that I feel is vital to making sure we have qualified nurses and that is to offer greateri incentives and higher pay for nurse educators. It is not that nursing programs aren’t attractive to students, it is that they lack the staff to train them.

How do you think we can combat the nursing shortage?

Hmm, I thought the shortage might have something to do with society’s silly mentality that nursing doesn’t match the importance, wages or respect of doctoring. As the population of old folks continues to shadow the younger generation, professions like nurses and care workers are more vital than ever.

  2. Mary says:

I agree that nursing educators aren't paid enough. It seems like the most of the educators out there do it b/c of the hours or they don't want to work on the floor anymore. And, the one's get teach b/c they enjoy it often have part time jobs on the side b/c the pay is crap. And, here in NW Florida, the starting wage for a new grad is $17/hr…how pathetic is that!

    Drake-
I'm sure that society's view of nursing does impact it a good bit. However, in the US, or at least in where I'm from, the South, nurses are generally respected by the comunity and most people think we make boatload of money. We don't. While it could always stand to be improved, I'm proud to earn a decent living. I can feed my family and my lights and water stay on. Our biggest problem is the inability to make new nurses fast enough, especially with that overshadowing of old folk you refer to.

Mary – I agree. Starting salary at the hospitals here are between $18 and $19 so don't feel too discouraged. Atlanta market gets between $22-26, I hear. Truth be told though, people who dig ditches dont make half of that and we need those folks just like we need nurses. I guess what I mean to say, is I am just thankful to have a career where my wisdom and mind yeild me a more profitable gain, because my back surely wouldn't!

  4. Hey The Nerdy Nurse,
Speaking of which, We need more nurses and its probably because feminists have encouraged women to get out and do men’s jobs that we have such a shortage. Atleast that is what I think.
    All the Best
